Loose The Weight
Racers are always looking for a way to go
faster. In many cases you can reach a point where the ratio between that
extra ET and dollars becomes very much out of proportion. In our case, our
car would run 5.42 - 5.45 in the eighth mile in hot humid conditions and we wanted
to pick it up just a little. In very good air, it would carry the front
wheels 8-12" on the launch so we also wanted to try and bring it down to
earth to gain more reaction time consistency.
Every one
knows that lighter is quicker. How we approached it was to eliminate the
Optima yellow top batteries that we had in the back of our dragster and
replace them with a 21 pound Braille carbon fiber battery in the nose. The
Braille
B3121C is 6" x 5" x 5" sealed battery that
produces 1380 Pulse Cranking Amps (for 10 seconds at 80 degrees) and 550
Cold Cranking Amps (for 30 seconds at 30 degrees). These batteries also have
a 2 year warranty. Being a sealed battery, it can be mounted anywhere and in
any position, even upside down.
We have run this battery in the
car for most of 2010 and the results were very impressive. We immediately
picked up a full tenth of a second in the eighth mile now running 5.32 -
5.34. Last weekend with the air temperature at 76 degrees we ran 5.27. The
battery recharges very quickly (within 10 minutes) between rounds using a
Schumacher electronic charger and we have never had a problem starting the
car on alcohol or run out of juice even when running round robin rounds.
From our experience, we will highly recommend Braille batteries to any of
our customers.
